How To Make Your Computer Boot Faster In A Few Simple Steps

One of the most frequent questions I get asked is how to make your computer boot faster. Although you can get into doing some really heavy duty tweaking, there are a few simple little changes you can make that will really improve your boot speed.

The first and most simple step you can do to improve slow computer performance is to go into your Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and remove any programs you do not use on a regular basis. So many of us are guilty for installing every program under the sun. After installed you tend to forget about it and never use it again. So perform a little clean up by removing all of the programs you do not use.

There are many programs that start when your computer is booted and continue to run in the background. This not only affects your computer boot speed but it also will effect computer performance after it has been booted. Those programs running in the background will continually take away available resources. Another option on how to make your computer boot up faster is to remove any programs that are not needed to be started at boot time. We can tweak these startup items though a built in windows program called MSCONFIG. Here is how you can access it:

  • Go to Start > Run
  • Type msconfig
  • Hit Enter or click OK

This will bring up the System Configuration Window. You will then want to select the Startup Tab as shown in the picture below.

I like to expand the Command column so that I can get more detail as to what program is being started. Go through and un-check any items you know that you won’t need to have run at startup. Here a a few automatics I always uncheck:

  • Java
  • RealPlayer
  • Adobe Reader
  • Adobe Update
  • Quicktime

I also would recommend that if you don’t know what the program is, you can always Google the .exe and find out exactly what you are dealing with and then make a decision. Optimizing your startup items is one part of the answer to how to make your computer boot faster.

If your looking to speed up boot time and increase computer speed but you are not comfortable doing all of the system tweaks, then you may want to think about using a great program such as SpeedUpMyPC 2010 by Uniblue. This is a Microsoft Gold Certified application and it can work wonders to not only help make XP run faster, but it works well with Vista and Windows 7. I highly recommend it.

Be sure to take action and use these tips so you can learn how to make your computer boot faster and also increase PC performance at the same time.
